World Youth Day

pope-john-paul-ii-0201Initiated in 1986 by Pope John Paul II (pictured), World Youth Day is a Catholic youth event celebrated annually on a Diocesan level and every three years at a week-long International level at different locations throughout the world.

In 2008 Sydney hosted the 23rd World Youth Day that brought over 400,000 people together for Mass with Pope Benedict XVI at Randwick Racecourse.  Almost 500 young people from across the Darwin Diocese were at that celebration. Since then there has been a re-igniting of pilgrimages to World Youth Day’s across the world.

Over 80 from our diocese traveled to Madrid, Spain for World Youth Day in 2011 and over 40 traveled to Rio de Janeiro in 2013.

Some of the largest gatherings of young people in the world have happened at World Youth Days. A record number of over 5 million young people attended World Youth Day in the Philippines in 1995 (pictured left). It is a wonderful celebration where young people from many nations and cultures travel great distances to gather in unity to celebrate their faith.  Whilst the event is organised by the Catholic Church, the invitation is to all.

World Youth Day is not just a day or an experience, but an ongoing pilgrimage of faith for young people. These special days and celebrations are meant to rejuvenate and reinvigorate the spiritual life of youth and young adults along their pilgrim journey, which ultimately leads to Christ Jesus.
